Gear Necessity: Stroller Blankets

Standing in line at the Post Office yesterday, I got to talking about the love for Stroller Blankets - especially the JJ Cole we were given as a baby shower present two years ago. I had mentioned that upon receiving it, I had thought "Hm, how nice." And now it's turned into one of the most important things we have for bambino! We've even extended it by using large safety pins to lower the back to fit year 1-2.

Once that chill comes in the air - usually during the Telluride Film Festival - we all start searching for our winter stroller blanket. Some never take it off - I actually left the bottom piece on all summer for a cushion on our BOB.

After the convo yesterday, I got to thinking about all those great stroller blankets that are out there, and what was available once they pass the 2 year old mark and grow out of the beloved JJ Cole. Here's some ideas:

Despite the price (around $199, or $189 on Amazon), the 7AM Enfant Blanket 212 Evolution (above) works from birth to 4 years, being functional and stylish at the same time. The zippered extensions allow the blanket to grow with your baby, and the weatherproof outside keeps your child warm and safe.

maclaren foot muff

If you have a lovely Maclaren, look into the Maclaren Universal Foot Muff. The foot muff has a fleece lining, and you apparently can close the stroller without removing the blanket. Having said this, you have to have a Maclaren - quite an investment here in Telluride.

jj cole bundle meIf I had to purchase one myself, I'd go for the $98 JJ Cole Arctic Bundle Me (and I'm also eyeing the Urban version - looks very roomy).

As mentioned, we received the Original Shearling Lined BundleMe (can't beat the price - $40, or color selection) as a baby shower present, we use it every day, and as mentioned, have extended it to fit our 1-2 year old. Apparently it now comes in a Toddler Version (years 1-3). I'll be looking into that next winter!

And if you have a BOB, check out the Warm Fuzzy. You still need another blanket, but would work great in the spring/summer. The beauty of the others mentioned is how they zip together, creating a mini sleeping-bag of warmth for your little one.

Postpartum Food & Fitness

Whether you are postpartum a week, a few months, or a few years, we all can use some tips on nutrition in this new year. Although we don't live in a major metropolis, we do have access to a wonderful selection of local foods and produce... if you seek it out. Don't wait for our summer farmer's market, and in the meantime, take some tips from Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses :

After a holiday season full of delicious and plentiful food, the task of working on getting back your pre-pregnancy body may seem daunting. But with the momentum of the new year, now is the best time to get yourself healthy and in shape. Since your metabolism slows down after pregnancy, a combination of some simple exercises (cardiovascular and muscle strengthening) along with smart food and portioning choices will help you can get fit and stay healthy. Below are simple changes you can make, and safe, easy ways to get your body moving.

Before you start any new workouts or meal plans, please keep a few things in mind:

Begin no earlier than six weeks postpartum. If you just had your baby, don't even think or stress about losing weight for at least six weeks. I know you may feel great and ready to "get back" but it's critical that you keep your body rested and well fed so you have the energy you need to care for yourself and your newborn. When in doubt about when you should start, check with your health care provider.

Achieving healthy weight goals is not about dieting. In fact, your postpartum recovery depends on your body getting enough calories. And if you are breastfeeding, you'll need to keep up your calories to support both you and your baby. Instead of cutting calories, think about what you are eating every day (or even write it down). You will see results and be healthier if you eat frequent, nutrient-packed, small meals throughout the day.

Don't place unrealistic expectations on yourself - think long-term health and fitness. You've probably read and heard this a hundred times, but remember, you were pregnant for the better part of a year and it will take just as long for your body to return to its pre-pregnant state. Don't compare yourselves to friends or colleagues who seem like they just "naturally" slimmed down after giving birth. That is not the norm! Instead, think about the changes you want to make in the coming year, whether that involves toning up your body, dropping pounds, becoming more active, or feeling healthier and more energized. All of these things take dedication and time.

Now, let's begin with a few basic diet changes you can make, not only to make your body feel healthier but also to help you shed a few pounds.

Healthy foods to add to your diet:

  • lean protein (high percentage lean beef, poultry, fish, beans, eggs)
  • whole grain pasta and rice
  • low fat or non fat dairy
  • nuts, beans, legumes
  • fruits and vegetables high in fiber

Food to limit or avoid:

  • white bread
  • white pasta and rice
  • bagels
  • crackers
  • refined processed carbohydrates (cookies, muffins, cakes, donuts, packaged snacks, and sugary cereals)
  • fast foods

In addition to making these healthier food choices, you'll want to start getting fit through exercise -- starting out at very low impact and gradually increasing activity and intensity. Here are some easy ways to get your body moving initially:

Walk. Whether it's just staying on your feet around the house for five minutes, a ten-minute walk around the block, or a half hour mini hike in the woods, walking is the best way to break your body back into exercise. Try and do this at least once a day (the fresh air will also give you a boost of energy!) and gradually increase your time and pace. Just place your little one in the baby carrier or stroller and get moving!

Dance. I realize we're not all born with moves and that's OK! Even if you don't quite feel comfortable dancing, I wouldn't dismiss it completely before trying it out as a source of postpartum exercise. You can even dance with your baby; put on your favorite songs and start out slowly by holding your baby and swaying, or bending your knees to the beat. As you begin to feel stronger each day, add new movements. Although it may seem silly, you'll get your heart pumping and both you and your baby will enjoy the bonding.

Yoga/Stretch. Stretching out your body throughout the day can help with circulation and strengthen your body, getting it prepared for more vigorous exercise. And doing a few simple yoga poses can really work wonders. Many of the moms I've worked with swear by using postnatal yoga DVDs to get their bodies back into shape and feel more energetic. It's a really great, affordable way to re-engage your body and calm your mind while you're at it!

Whatever your goals or plans are for getting fit in the new year, stay positive and know that the healthier you make your lifestyle, the better you will look and feel.

It's undeniable that the Big Lebowski is a cult fave - especially here in Telluride! And undoubtedly there is at least one dude you know - if not a whole pack - that strives to just abide. What to get that dude? Here are some ideas - fresh from the movie - so your dude can be the Dude he always wanted to be. And/or dress up for when the Nugget shows the movie next time...

High-Altitude Cooking Adjustments

When cooking at high altitude, over 7,000 feet - or more aptly, ours at close to 9,000 feet - be sure to adjust your recipes for proper cooking. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

Cooking:
- Boiling water: takes longer - sometimes up to 10 minutes. Adding some salt will speed up the boiling process.
-All else might take just a bit longer to cook, so incorporate that into your timing. Patience!

Baking:
- General: Some people swear to increase the cooking temperature by 25 degrees.
- Cookies: Add the extra flour (usually 1/4 cup). Do not bake higher than 350 degrees.
- Baking Powder: Many people swear to reduce each baking powder teaspoon by 1/3.
- Baking Soda: Same as for baking powder
- Packaged Mixes: Always add 2 Tablespoons extra flour
- Yeast breads: Follow the recipe exactly and let the yeast proof really well. Add a bit more flour and let rise 10-15 minutes longer than normal.

Winter fun with kids

So it's January and we are indoors for a while. What are some fun winter activities to do with the kids?

For Toddlers:

- We love the Sledding Hill (known in the summer as Firecracker Hill), where kids of all ages can have fun sledding outdoors. Just park at Town Park parking, and follow the orange cones to the hill. Be careful of the outdoor cross-country course along your way.

- Indoors, we have our local Telluride Library, with a large playroom and book selections for your little one.

- Try a class at AhHaa School for the Arts - such as Kindermusik.

- Or why not ride the gondola?

For older children:

- Telluride Ski & Snowboard School offers individual and group lessons

- AhHaa school for the arts offers classes for all levels of interest, including Kindermusik for the tots

- Telluride Museum offers free local's day every Thursday! - Today!

- The Library now offers Wii games, too!

In the vicinity (within 1.5 hours):

- Ouray offers the Hot Springs (nearby Orvis is clothing optional)

- Montrose offers:
the Climbing Tree Children's Museum (children under 1, free; children $4; adults $4) &
an Aquatic Center (children under 3, free; kids $4.25; adults $5)

- Cortez has an indoor swimming pool for just $1. Did you know that? [Update: the fees changed in 2010 - youth under 17 are $2.50, adults are $3.50]

Telluride's Plastic Bag Ban

Remember to bring your resuable bags!

As of New Year's Day, Telluride has enacted it's ban on plastic bags in its stores. Paper bags will now be 10-cents, and plastic bags will be phased out fully by March 1. Long heralded by a local environmentalist, the ban got new wind with local Suzan Beraza's film "Bag It" starring Jeb Berrier.

To learn more about Bag It, visit the library or follow them here on facebook.

What to do with all those plastic bags? Recycle them to boxes outside Village Market, Clark's and inside Montrose's City Market and Safeway.
